Ceramic coatings for Ballistic Protection

Thermal sprayed ceramic coatings with precisely tailored properties provide effective ballistic protection even against armor-piercing ammunition for civilian and military vehicles

Military and private security forces have to face and adopt to new threats in hostile territories which include firearms with various calibers, IED’s and EFP’s. In order to face these threats and offer the optimum protection for human lives, engineers continually adapt and improve present logistic and light armored vehicle platforms. Therefore the IMTCCC developed a new vehicle ballistic protection system consisting of a thermal sprayed ceramic layer composite on a hard steel backing. The challenge was to offer the highest level of protection at the lowest possible weight which requires a precisely tailored interaction between material properties, residual stress levels and layer composite structure.
