Development of antibacterial coatings for improved osseointegration of endoprostheses.

High Velocity Suspension Flame Spraying (HVSFS) has been successfully employed to produce a wide variety of dense and well adherent calcium phosphate and bioglass based coatings for metal bone implants. In recent years, the focus has gradually shifted to a group of degradable bioceramic coatings like bio-glasses, as they offer a faster osseointegration of the endoprosthetic structure. Current research focusses on doping with metals whose known antibacterial properties reduce the risk of inflammation.
